I said this during an interview I did with The Phit Female and sadly, this is the reality with female athletes and their training or lack their of
Females are 9X more likely to tear their ACL
Each year, ACL injuries in females increase by 3%
When I played high school and college basketball (1996-2003), I came also 1 ACL injury and that was my senior year in college
If you asked a girl now, have many female athletes do they know with an ACL injury, they usually know 3-5 girls
We have gone backwards in how we train since I played basketball
So how do we move forward…
1. Stop playing sports year round. Kids need to rest, recover and have fun
2. Early sports specialization. Play multiple sports, or at least go outside and “play”. Play football, throw a softball, baseball around, play tag, etc
3. Girls need to do some form of sports performance training. This needs to include strength, deceleration training, teaching girls how to land, pivot, change direction, etc. There also needs to be a conversation about sleep, nutrition, recovery
4. The Female Athlete Inner Circle – an online vault of information on the female athlete. This vault is here to educate athletes, coaches and parents
