The High School Weight Room and Why It Needs to Change
In our conversations last week discussing the ACL epidemic in girls, the weight room culture came up and how girls are scared and the weight room is a boys club
My response – Change It!
Here’s why it’s important…
The obvious answer is, we need our girls strength training to help reduce these ACL injuries, to get stronger, working as a team and competing!
The more important answer; increased confidence and self esteem in our girls
Studies are also coming out on how it helps to decrease depression (this is HUGE)
Also, in the end 1% will go on to be a professional athlete, so let’s teach these girls how to train, how to enjoy the process and educate them on how to take care of themselves so they are equip well after their playing days
Coaches it’s your responsibility to demand time in the weight room
Get these girls in, hire a qualified strength coach in person or online and have them design your programs
Fight to get in the weight room, change the culture
And honestly, if you cannot get in the weight room, don’t give up
Work on bodyweight and partner training. Grab some resistance bands and do partner speed, strength and agility work and do it right on the basketball court
Let me help you, help your players
Let me help you design programs that these girls will enjoy and have fun with
