Not sure if you know this but I am the head strength and conditioning coach at a local private school outside of Boston
In the last 2 weeks, we have talked a lot on ABS and how to train them
When I work with my athletes, I always try and educate them so they know why we do everything we do
The job of the “core” is to stabilized the spine as we move our extremities
With sit-ups and crunches, you are flexing and moving the spine
We need flexion in our spine but we get plenty of it during the day. Repeated flexion is the exact same movement of a herniated disc
So where do you start with your AB (CORE) Training?
1. Can you low plank and hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute with good form
(Create tension, abs braced, butt tight, pull your elbows into your ribs, breathe)
2. Can you high plank and hold with good form?
3. Can you side plank and hold with good form?
Once we lay the foundation, we will add movement with these 3 exercises
I will be back on Wednesday, breaking down the low plank and adding movement
