Over the weekend, a parent reached out to me. Here’s is what she wrote:
“My daughter plays basketball and she’s doing strength and conditioning since her 11 years old or less like CrossFit and others things now she’s 14 .I noticed that her shots are to long sometimes when before she made almost all of them I’m talking about 3 points shots, yesterday she told me that a coach told her once that if she keeps lifting or doing those kind of exercises that will happen because she’s getting to strong.”
Before I give my answer, I just want to say how much I love that her daughter is training 🙂
I used one of the best basketball teams in the country, the UConn women’s basketball team as my example
They lift 4 to 5 a week this summer, I know this because I have talked with their strength coach.
How is Katie Lou’s shot, Diana Taurasi’s?
Another player, Elena Delle Donne has a performance coach and crushes it in the off season
These 3 women are some of the best shooters in basketball and they strength train
So, NO, lifting is not going to effect your shot
And to the coach that said stop lifting, please educate yourself on the benefits on performance training for young female athletes 🙂
So to all the young girls out there, stay positive and keep getting stronger
I would love to know your thoughts
Your friend and coach
